Class Visits

Due to COVID-19 impacts and restrictions, this service is currently unavailable. Please check back for on-going updates.

The Pickering Public Library is committed to partnering with, and supporting, our local educational institutions to promote a lifelong love of reading, strong literacy skills, and a connection with the library and community. Currently, the Pickering Public Library offers a set list of class and school visit options which are available to all Pickering schools serving classes from Kindergarten to Grade 8.

To request a class or school visit, please fill out the Class Visit form and a staff member will contact you shortly to discuss the visit in more detail. All requests for visits will be approved based on staff availability – we may not be able to accommodate all requests, particularly those made at the last minute.

To ensure that students receive library cards during their class visit, educators are encouraged to print the library card application form, distribute it to all students, and drop off the signed and completed forms to the Central Library at least one week before the scheduled visit. All library card application forms must be signed by a parent or guardian.

We currently offer the following types of visits:

Library Orientation & Tour (at the Central Library) (Kindergarten – Grade 8)
Bring your students to us and get them excited about everything their library has to offer! This visit includes a library tour tailored to your students’ needs and interests. Please indicate any specific topics or collections that you would like us to highlight during your visit.

Storytime (Kindergarten – Grade 2)
Join us at the library, or have us come to your classroom, to present books, songs, rhymes and movement, which will get your students excited about literacy! Storytime themes can be tailored to your unit of study or chosen by our knowledgeable staff.

Booktalk (Grades 3-6)
The essentials of a Storytime visit (at the library, or in your classroom), but geared toward students in Grades 3-6. Our staff will work with you to select books and themes of importance to your students as a jumping-off point for interesting discussions and activities.

Virtual Library Tour (Grades 4-8)
Learn how to access your library 24 hours a day! During this visit (at the library, or in your classroom), your students will learn about, and get a chance to explore, our eBooks as well as our amazing online resources which can meet their educational and leisure needs.

Tech Play (Kindergarten – Grade 8)
Connect your students with the broad range of tech ‘toys’ the library has to offer. Learn about coding, or take a virtual field trip, with products ranging from Omso’s to Augmented Reality.

School Events (eg. Welcome to Kindergarten, Kindergarten Graduation, Caregiver Nights etc.)
Hosting a school event? Invite us to set up a booth to help connect families to all of the amazing programs, resources and services the library has to offer!
