A BRIEF GUIDE
There is a lot you want and need to know when starting your own business. By preparing a business plan you may find that many of your questions will answer themselves. An educated business plan will contain a descriptive summary of all past (if not a new business), present and future activities of your business. It will detail the company's sources and use of funds, management and other personnel, labour relations, production techniques, research, and marketing strategy for your product or service.
It will set all your objectives, guidelines and milestones on paper. It will include a statement of how much capital is required (this will be necessary should you have to obtain a loan). It should also list a wide range of items such as your day-to-day business operations, who your competitors are, your strengths and weaknesses, new and existing markets and costs and a five year forecast of revenue and profit.
A typical business plan starts with your business idea, a description of what the service or product will be, the market for your product or service, how much capital is required for startup and forcasted financial results. This introductory page is then followed by a table of contents and then the business plan itself.
As every business is different, the specific contents of each business plan will also be different. The City of Oshawa's Economic Development Office, put together this list of the major components of a business plan, along with most of the questions your plan should answer.
