Durham-Area Students Compete in White Pine Battle of the Books

High Schools from Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax and Pickering squared off in a Battle of the Books Competition on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at McLaughlin Branch of Oshawa Public Libraries.
Teams were each asked a total of 48 questions based on 15 books. Two different types of questions are posed: In which book does… and secondly, In The Way It Is, name the award… Students have 20 seconds to respond to the first kind of question with the title and author last name and a total of 2 minutes and 30 seconds to respond to the Lightning round questions.
The top 3 scoring teams Notre Dame C.S.S., Ajax H.S. and Donald A. Wilson S.S. then played a final round of 24 questions to determine an overall winner. Ajax’s Notre Dame C.S.S. won first place with a total of 130 points.
“It is phenomenal how these students are able to retain the smallest details and pull that information out on the spot!” said Manager, Children’s & Youth Services, Kim O’Reilly.
Every year, more schools participate and we hope this continues.
Thanks to Teacher Librarians, parents, students and Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa Public Libraries for making the Battle another huge success!
