Get Creative for the March Break Short Story Contest

Contest ends at 9:00 p.m. on Friday, March 19th, 2010

The Library invites young writers to enter a Short Story Contest. The short story must begin with line:

"Maybe it was my imagination but yesterday I looked through the library window and I thought I saw ..."

Our panel of judges will select one winning entry from each of the following categories:

JK - SK
Grades 1 - 3
Grades 4 - 6
Grades 7 - 8
Grades 9 - 12

All winning entries will be published on the Library's website. Writers must live in Pickering, attend school in Pickering, or have a valid Pickering Public Library card.
The short story can be no more than two pages long and must be accompanied by an entry form. Entry forms are available to download or at your local branch.
To submit your entry you may drop it off at your local library branch starting Monday, March 1st, 2010.

TD Canadian Children's Literature Award winner announced

The TD Canadian Children's Literature Awards honours the most distinguished children's book of the year. This year's English-language winner was Shin-chi's Canoe by Nicola I. Campbell with illustrations by Kim LaFave. The finalists were: Death in the Air by Shane Peacock, Libertad by Alma Fullerton, Thing-Thing by Cary Fagan, and Word Nerd by Susan Nielsen.

Why I Love the Library Bookmark Winners

Creative Pickering kids had a chance to showcase their artistic skills as well as to tell us why they love their library in the Pickering Library’s “Why I Love the Library” Bookmark contest. In celebration of Ontario Public Library Week, the winning bookmark in each category has been made available at each Pickering Library Branch.

Children's iPod titles now available

We are proud to announce the expansion of our digital collection to include children’s iPod audiobooks. Available from the iHelp desk, your family can now enjoy such titles as The House at Pooh Corner, 39 clues and Charlotte's Web. All titles circulate for three weeks and can be either loaded on your own iPod or borrow one from the library.

Ottoline and the Yellow Cat

Her parents are off on adventures around the world. Collecting strange and wonderful things. Meanwhile Ottoline Brown is home, in her big apartment. She is in charge of looking after her parents collections of odd things...such as teapots with more than one spout. Mr. Monroe, who is a rather hairy sort of creature from Norway, looks after Ottoline.
